The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission (NCWRC) invites the public to attend an informational meeting in Edgecombe County about Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) on Thursday, August 13, 2026 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the East Carolina Agricultural & Education Center, 1175 Kingsboro Road, Rocky Mount.
CWD has been confirmed in Edgecombe County, which is now the most recent location in the state where the disease has been detected.
“We want to ensure deer hunters are aware of new rules and processes surrounding CWD, and to answer any questions they may have, especially due to this being the first full deer season since the confirmed cases there,” said Greg Batts District 3 Wildlife Biologist. “Hunters can also help us control CWD by utilizing expanded opportunities through the CWDMAP program.”
Currently seven North Carolina counties have been confirmed to have deer infected with CWD, which is spread within deer populations and can be spread unintentionally by hunters through improper disposal of deer carcasses. CWD surveillance and management areas are posted on the agency’s website.
“This meeting is an excellent opportunity for hunters to learn about the detection of CWD in Edgecombe County, the resulting new Surveillance Area, and to ask questions about how these changes may impact their hunting seasons moving forward,” said Wildlife Health Biologist Miranda Turner.
