Nest Boxes

Overview

Nest boxes supplement scarce cavities in younger forests or limited riparian sites (bluebirds, wood ducks, wrens, chickadees, titmice, nuthatches, flying squirrels). Placement and design determine success and species mix.

Guidance

  • Bluebird boxes: spacing, predator guards, site selection; also attract other small cavity nesters depending on placement.
  • Wood duck boxes: mount over/near water with predator guards.
  • Squirrel den boxes: useful where natural cavities are limited.
