The Yonahlossee salamander has a black base color with reddish-brown to red blotches on its back. In older individuals, these blotches often merge into a broad band, though southern populations typically retain scattered blotches. Found in high-elevation deciduous forests of North Carolina’s mountains, they shelter in burrows, under logs, or among rocks during the day and are active at night. They feed on invertebrates, lay eggs in underground retreats, and hatch as miniature adults without an aquatic larval stage; adults can secrete a sticky substance to deter predators.
