Wehrle’s salamander has a dark brown to black body with light blotches along the sides, and juveniles may show red or yellow spots on the back. Its underside is gray with pale blotching on the throat and chest, and the hind feet are notably webbed for a terrestrial species. This state-threatened salamander is found only in a small region of northwestern North Carolina, where it lives in upland forests with rocky ledges, crevices, and cave entrances. It feeds on invertebrates at night and remains hidden during the day.
