The three-lined salamander has a tan to yellow body marked by three distinct dark stripes: one along the back and one on each side, though the central stripe may appear broken in some individuals. It is common at lower elevations across central and western North Carolina and is usually found near wetlands, springs, or slow-moving streams. This species feeds on a variety of invertebrates. Breeding takes place in sluggish or still waters, where eggs are laid and hatch in early spring.
