The red salamander is a large, stout species reaching 6–7 inches in length, known for its bright red body and black spots. They darken with age and the spots may blend to make the salamander appear purplish. It is found throughout the Piedmont and Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, usually near streams, seepages, and other moist habitats. These salamanders are nocturnal predators, feeding on invertebrates and sometimes smaller salamanders. Their bright red color mimics toxic species and offers some protection from predators, as red salamanders are mildly toxic themselves.
