The long-tailed salamander is a slender species with a notably long tail and yellowish-orange to brown coloring, marked with black spots. In North Carolina, it is found only in the far northwestern corner of the state. It inhabits caves and the edges of shale or limestone stream beds, often sheltering under rocks, logs, or in crevices. Both adults and larvae are generalist feeders, consuming a variety of invertebrates based on seasonal or local availability.
