Junaluska salamanders resemble two-lined salamanders but can be distinguished by their mottled brown coloration, lack of dark stripes, longer legs, and shorter tails. They are found only in a small area of Tennessee and in North Carolina's Graham County, typically near streams in colder months and likely moving into forests during warmer periods. They likely feed on small invertebrates. Junaluska salamanders have always been rare in North Carolina, and one population may have been lost due to upstream human activity.
