Jordan’s salamander is found only in high-elevation forests of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and is identified by red, orange, or yellow cheek patches, which are brighter in younger individuals. It is a highly terrestrial species, often hiding under logs, rocks, or debris. These salamanders are most active and easiest to spot at night, especially in wet conditions. Despite its limited range, the species is often very abundant. It primarily feeds on small invertebrates found on the forest floor.
