The four-toed salamander is a small species easily recognized by its four rear toes, tail constriction, and white belly with bold black spots. It lives mainly in central North Carolina, with some populations in the mountains and coastal plain. These salamanders inhabit forested areas near swamps, bogs, and fish-free wetlands. Adults feed mostly on small invertebrates, while larvae consume plankton-sized organisms as well as insects and other small invertebrates.'
