All three species of mountain dusky salamanders show highly variable coloration and are best distinguished by their geographic range. They share features like a round tail and a light line from the eye to the jaw, though their back patterns vary from stripes to spots or no markings at all. These salamanders are common in the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina, with each species occupying different regions. They live near streams, seepage areas, and wet rock faces, but can also be found far from water, especially at higher elevations. Active mostly at night, they are generalist predators that feed on invertebrates and may climb vegetation while foraging.
